Systems Thinking & Sustainability K-12 Teacher Training

Client: personal project in collaboration with Compass Education

Date: 2023- 2024

Summary: As a Civic and Environmental Education (CEE) Change Fellow with the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) in 2023, I completed a one year teacher training project through partnership with the nonprofit Compass Education to empower education in North American with systems thinking tools to incorporate greater sustainability into their education practice.

Learning Format: virtual teacher training project

Project Overview

To design an engaging and impactful virtual learning experience that would empower K-12 Educators from across North America with a practical, action-oriented understanding of system thinking mindsets and tools to develop their capacity to teach and learning about climate and sustainabiltiy related topics as part of their existing curriculum.

The Goal

I modified an existing Compass Education workshop series to run a free three-part virtual training for educators from around North America called “Introduction to the Compass Tools: Systems Thinking for Climate Education and Civic Action.” This series introduced participants to the fundamentals of systems thinking and versatile tools they could use to engage students in education and action for sustainability.

The Learning Experience

  • 8 educators completed the workshop series.

  • We estimate that educators in this training have engaged 270 - 360 students in systems thinking for climate education or civic action.

  • 14 educators are pursuing a Compass Practitioner certification.
